Vintage Mid Century Retro E-Gomme for G Plan'Redford' 1950's Sideboard. This is a mid-century sideboard by E Gomme for G-plan. It is beautifully designed, and is quite compact for a sideboard. It was designed as part of the'Redford' furniture range.
In 1951, which was the year of the Festival of Britain. The range was apparently produced in relatively small numbers, making it quite a rare find. We can be sure that this sideboard is an early example. And will have been produced during the 50's or at the very latest during the early 60's.
This can be determined by the G Plan gold stamp on the inside of the right hand cupboard door. Apparently it was the only first range of furniture, from 1952 heading into the early 1960s that saw furniture embossed with this gold stamp. The text reads:'E Gomme, High Wycombe'. The central initials stand for Ebenezer Gomme the designer and founder of the company.
Beneath his name is'G Plan' in capital letters. From the mid 60's the stamp design changed. The sideboard has beautiful proportions, with some lovely styling and detail.
At the top of the sideboard are two drawers, with lovely horizontally positioned ergonomic handles. The right hand drawer is lined with a green baize, which would have been to protect cutlery.
Unfortunately this baize has a round stain where something has clearly leaked in the past. Beneath the drawers are two s. Ymmetrical cupboards, this time with the same ergonomic handles positioned in a vertical position. Inside the cupboard is a shallow shelf that runs the full length of the sideboard.
Overall, the condition is pretty reasonable for a piece that is approaching 70 years old, however there are a number of age related marks. On the top of the sideboard, when viewed in the right light, it is noticeable that the veneer has started to slightly split in places. This makes it sound really bad, and it is not that noticeable, but we try to describe things as accurately as possible to avoid disappointment. There are also three patches slightly visible where we assume pots may have stood in the past. These do not look like water marks, but probably the rest of the surface area has slightly faded as a result of exposure to sunlight.
On the upstand, there is a small gouge in the back, close to the centre where we would assume something has fallen against it at some point in time. There are a number of dark marks on the legs and the cupboard surrounds that actually look really quite characterful, however these would not have been present in period, and assume are the result of small knocks and scratches over the years that have subsequently become darkened with polish. We believe we have priced it fairly to take into account the condition as listed above. It still presents as a really nice decorative piece of retro furniture.
